Best Foot Forward!
Denby Dale Parish Walking Group invites you to join our programme of led walks
Non-members hoping to walk with us should preferably contact the walk leader in advance, so that arrangements can be made to warmly welcome you and advise of any last-minute changes in the programme. In particular, starting points and times may alter, so please check before setting out.
For insurance reasons non-members must become members by their third walk (fee currently £5 per annum).
All the walks are reasonably easy and suitable for families. They are generally 4/6 miles long and take 3/4 hours including a short break. Please bring refreshments and carry a waterproof jacket. Stout footwear is also advisable when walking in the countryside. Children must be accompanied by an adult and dogs must be kept under close control at all times.
Denby Dale Parish (click here for location map) is situated in an attractive and extremely pleasant rural and semi-rural area approx. 8 miles south-east of Huddersfield and a similar distance from Wakefield and Barnsley. It contains various other settlements, including (for example) Emley, Skelmanthorpe, Scissett, Clayton West, Upper/Lower Denby, High Flatts, Birdsedge and Upper/LowerCumberworth. The market towns of Penistone and Holmfirth are not far away and the centres of major cities such as Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford are less than 20 miles (half an hour's drive) away. It's less than 30 miles to the centre of Manchester!
There is plenty of very attractive walking country within Denby Dale Parish itself (DDPWG was set up by the Parish Council in the mid-1990s to walk and report on the condition of public rights of way within the Parish area) and we do therefore try to walk locally when possible. However, we often go further afield, to places such as the Holme Valley, Langsett and Bradfield (areas wholly or partly within the Peak District National Park, which is very close to Denby Dale).
